Gale was wandering about in the corridors of District 13. The Nut was destroyed. The war was over. Snow and Coin were killed. Katniss is back with Peeta in District 12. Katniss... He was sure she's furious at him for possibly creating the bomb that killed little Prim. He didn't know where else to go. His life is turning out to be an endless corridor, all he has left to do is move forward until he dies. He's done his job and lost the girl. Not the best turn of events but he'll take it.
As his mind was wandering off on its own he accidentally bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm sorry." He turned his head and saw President Paylor. "Gale, funny seeing you here. I thought we sent you back to District 12?" He looked blankly into her eyes, "I didn't want to go. I'm no use there anymore." he sighed. President Paylor placed her hand under her chin, like she always does to think, "Well, there's nothing left here in 13. Why don't you go down to 2? Get a job, start a new life." The thought seemed to interest Gale, it snapped him out of semi-unconciousness.
He looked into her eyes with more life, but still hollow, "Sure. Why not..." A smile escaped the young President's lips. "Good. The next flight for that will be later today. Around 3PM at the hangar, okay Gale?" Gale returned to his semi-unconcious state and started walking away. Paylor said something else he couldn't quite understand and ignored it. District 2? What will he be able to do there? He shrugged the thought off and conciously wandered to his room. He jumped onto his bed and cleared his mind of everything Katniss. "She's gone," he whispered, "just like everything else." He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
He was standing in a field of flowers. He looked around and saw a woman. Her features were all blurry to Gale. He couldn't tell what she looked like but he can feel her smiling at him. He tried smiling back amidst the confusion. Then from behind the girl came a young boy, again Gale couldn't tell what he looked like. He picked the boy up and kissed him on the cheek. 'Hi daddy.' the boy seemed to smile. Then suddenly his dream shattered and he heard knocking on the door. He slowly drifted back to the real world.
He stood up and opened the door to find Paylor behind it. "Is your stuff ready? We're leaving in 10minutes." He rubbed his left eye and yawned, "In a minute." He went back to his room, leaving the door open and Paylor standing outside. He grabbed a bag, a few shirts, jeans and other stuff he didn't really think about and zipped it up. Gale slung the bag over his shoulder and yawned once more, "Alright. To District 2." The two started walking off towards to hangar. It was quiet at first, just the sounds of people talking. No one Gale knows is around anymore. He doesn't know why he stayed behind, neither does he know why he's leaving now.
He looked over at Paylor and studied her expression. No doubt there's a hint of accomplishment, she's proud that the war is over. Everybody's happy the war is over. He tried looking a bit deeper. Behind the smile he could see pain. Did she lose somebody? Gale didn't bother asking. He knows everybody lost something during the reign of Snow. Paylor opened the hangar door and let Gale step in. Besides the hovercraft taking him to District 2 the place was practically empty. When he took his first step towards the ship Paylor held his shoulder. He looked back, her expression stronger than ever. "Good luck, Gale," she cracked a smile, "and may the odds--" "Be ever in your favor." He smiled and hugged Paylor, one of his last friends.
He let go and walked to the craft, leaving District 13 behind. He boarded the small ship and sat down in one of the corner seats. The pilots mumbled something about protocol, he closed his eyes and decided to forget everything. As the craft was about to fly a scream came from outside. "Wait! Wait!" She boarded the craft and sat beside Gale, breathing heavily from the running, "Sorry I'm late." "No worries, Ms. Cresta, now, let's go." Cresta... Annie? Finnick's girl, right? Gale turned his head to look at the woman. Her hair was tied back and she wore a white dress. She turned around, now facing Gale.
"Oh, Gale." She sat beside me not knowing who I was? "Hi Annie. Headed back for District 4?" She nodded her head and looked away. Gale took it as saying 'Don't talk to me.' and turned his head to the window. He looked back at Annie and saw her looking at him. "Is there a problem?" She turned her head away again. Is she turning red? "No, there's no problem. So, where are you headed?" Gale rested his back on the wall, "District 2, I guess." "You're not going back to 12?" "Why would I? There's nothing left for me there."
Annie looked at him with concern, she held his hand gently. "There's never nothing for you, Gale." She smiled at him. She kind of reminded him of Katniss. He shook the thought aside and removed his hand from her grasp. He rested his head beside the window and closed his eyes. He felt something heavy on his shoulder. He looked back and saw Annie resting her head with a smile. He took her hand and gently placed his head on hers.
Was it just him or did Annie gently sqeeze his hand? He smiled at her and closed his eyes. A new girl? Maybe. A new life? Definitely. A new beginning for everybody.
