She walked down the hallways once more, unsure of what to make of what happened earlier with Delly. Katniss floated the endless hall to get to her room. Annie and Johanna are probably gone by now, but what if they aren't? What if they're still there? What did she bring upon herself? This is a situation she feels she will not get over. Just as she reached familiar room numbers a voice called out to her. It was full and low, but shaky. "Hey, Katniss." She looked up. Annie and Finnick were walking side by side, hand in hand like before. She put on a smile, in hopes that Finnick won't notice she cried. She nodded at them slightly.
She turned around but before she could leave Finnick grabbed her shoulder. "Hey Katniss. Could you help me for a bit?" She looked over her shoulder, over to Annie. She nodded and placed her gaze back to Finnick. "Uh... sure. What's wrong?" Finnick looked at Annie and sighed. He held Katniss's shoulder, letting go of Annie's hand, and gently prompted her to move a few paces away. She looked over her shoulder to find Annie standing alone, she looked so vulnerable and small. What does Finnick need that requires me? Does he know? Probably not. What if he does?
He looked over Annie one more time and fixed his sea-green eyes to Katniss. It looked just like Annie's, only deeper. She looked away from the piercing gaze of the victor, playing with her braid. "What's the matter with Annie?" she whispers. "I'm not sure," he whispers back, "but I don't want her to be like that. I found her in the middle of one of the halls crying," he looked at Annie and back at Katniss, "maybe you could make her smile. She seems to do that a lot around you." A constricted feeling took over Katniss's chest. She looked at Finnick, "She does?"
He sighs, obviously sad with the truth: that she can make Annie smile better than Finnick. "She could use your help, Katniss. You're the only other person I trust besides her and Johanna." At the word Johanna, Katniss could feel herself heat up. She shook the feeling out and smiled. "Okay, I'll help her." Finnick's lips curl up to a smile, but something seemed wrong. It looked... sad. They walk back to Annie. Katniss took her hand gently and smiled, "Come on, we have something to talk about." she said. She could tell Annie was stopping a laugh and looked over to Finnick. "Have fun you two." The smile faded from his lips and he sighed, walking away from them.
Katniss pulled Annie to the opposite direction, somewhere, anywhere, nowhere, just as long as they're together. Where's the best place to talk... she looked around as they walked down the hallways. "Katniss." Annie whispered, she let go of her hand and stopped walking. "What's wrong Annie?" her eyes were sad, a dim sea-green. Water filled her eyes and one by one they dropped down her cheek. "Annie..." she lifted her hand, trying to touch Annie's arm. She pulled away and stepped back. "Katniss, you know I love you right?"
She looked at Annie with nuetral eyes, "Yes, Annie, I know that. You should know that I love you, too." Katniss placed both her hands on Annie's cheeks and wiped the tears away. It's kind of weird for Katniss, someone younger, to be doing this to Annie, someone older. She smiled at the though, Annie smiled back. Katniss pulled close to her and gave a quick kiss, making Annie smile wider. "Let's go, we have something to talk about."
She took Annie's hand and started walking again, a destination now in mind. She tried recalling the look on Finnick's face, his sad eyes and his forced smile. He can tell that Annie is no longer happy with him. Katniss can't allow that. She loves Annie, but Finnick is her best friend. How can he trust her when she's doing this to him? Stealing his one and only love from him. Is that what a friend does? The thought of her and Annie is tempting. Katniss may be seventeen but she knows what she wants. She rushes past the cafeteria, over to the training center.
She has to end it where it started. Friendship, right now, in dire times like this, is more important. Tears started gathering in her eyes. How will she tell Annie that she can no longer want her?
